New Flooring – lots of pics

This Labor Day weekend, Mike and I laboured!   We pulled the 15 year old carpeting up and put down new flooring.  What I anticipated to be a one-day job, and Mike anticipated to be a two-day job, actually took us four days; and we’re still not done.  Of course, neither of us took into consideration that 8 doorways, a fireplace hearth and a bay window would require so much extra time to get the cuts right. (or that whoever put the padding down loved their staple gun as much as they did!)

The flooring is down, and like most home remodeling projects, it has snowballed into needing new baseboards.  But that’s a project for another time.

Below is the project, over the course of 4 days.  Would I do it again….in a heartbeat and I am looking forward to getting the rest of the carpeting in the house pulled and replaced.  Although it took more work than I anticipated, I have been breathing so much easier, have had almost no congestion, and haven’t had one asthma attack since we got the carpet out of the house.  I’d say it was one of those long overdue projects!

Neither one of us wanted to move the aquarium, so we waited until we were almost up to it to drain it. It now resides in the kitchen, on the vinyl where sloshing on the floor won't do any damage.

And if you’ve made it through all these pics, here’s a closeup of the actual flooring.  Swiftlock25, in Fireside Oak.  (mom this pics for you)

Now I’m off to the studio, my mind is overflowing with ideas and projects and I feel a need to touch textiles, not more flooring!

  1. Oh my gosh, it looks so awesome.. for some reason, I did not realize that you were putting wood flooring down, but when you said Boxes, it made me understand it was probably wood… Yeah.. so much easier to vacuum, keep furry..fuzzies at bay!!! You are going to love it… I am glad for you that it is over..
We had a minor accident last night on our way home from my daughter’s.. The bike rack collapsed and the bike and the rack fell in the road.. We were in not so nice a neighborhood, but fortunately not much traffic.. Lou was able to get the locks off, but because we had James in the car in his crate, we could not put the bike in the car.. so he rode it back to my daughter’s..which was not far away.. I am sore today… so am going to “cool it”.. but we are going for our flu shots in a short while..

  2. We keep talking about pulling the carpet up in our living/dining/back hallway areas. I know there is hardwood under it…. just not sure what kind of condition it is in. I know that pulling it up would help my husband’s allergies…. and be easier to clean should the cat give us a hairball. Oh my, so many decision to make!

Your’s looks lovely…. I love the rich, deep brown of the wood you chose.

    Keep up the good work!

  3. Congratulations! I need to replace the carpeting in the upstairs rooms. I’ve though about wood flooring but I have more trouble with the off-gassing from the composite and treated wood than I do from carpet plus I really like my feet on a soft surface. But then again I love the look of wood floors……and that’s why I haven’t replaced the upstairs carpet! Regardless I will hire someone to do it when it happens!

  4. Michael did a great job! It looks wonderful. It’s a lot darker than what we’re working with. Can’t wait to get our living room, dining room, hallway done! What inspiration yours is!!! Thanks for sharing.
