A new keyboard and I’m back!

After going to town and doing my normal weekly errands today, which included picking up an external keyboard for my laptop, I’m back with a post and pictures!

Despite the deceptively quiet blog the for the last week, it has been productively busy here.  On Monday, the 17th, I went to Rock Hill, SC and gave a lecture (Borders, When, Where, Why and How)  to the York County Quilt Guild.  What a wonderful group of women, I really enjoyed the interaction and discussions during the presentation.

On Saturday the 22nd, I returned to Rock Hill to teach a workshop (Alternative Edges for Art Quilts) to a great group of 10 ladies from the guild.  We really enjoyed the day and everyone finished all three of their technique samples.  Thank you to York County Quilters for inviting me!

I’ve also been working on commission quilts.  Both are traditional quilts and the process of making them has been fun and reminded me of my roots in quilting.

This is the now quilted Irish Chain quilt of the last post (before my laptop keyboard went wonkers on me):

All of the quilting on this Irish Chain was set in by the IQ.

The other quilt is a variation of the Grandmother’s Fan quilt.

Barbs-Quilt-FullThe picture doesn’t truly show the colors in the fabrics, this quilt is shades of greens and purple/lavenders.

I used freehand feathering in the white areas and the purple borders of this quilt and freehand swirly ribbons in the fan blades.  Then let the IQ set butterflies into the centers of the fans.  A simple piano key treatment on the outer border stitches it down without taking anything away from the focus of the fabric itself.

A light lavendar back, with a darker purple thread, allows the quilting design to really show on the back:

Sometimes (usually) I like the backs of quilts the best, if the backing is one you can actually see the stitching on.  But then, as you all know, I love wholecloth quilts as well….they were my first love……although it took years for me to actually make one!
