I needed some mindless piecing to do this morning. Something I didn’t have to think about, just repetitive and calming. Something that had no expectations attached to it’s result. So, I pulled out some cut off strips from my hand-dyes and decided to do some strip piecing with them. No set sizes, no set color scheme, just whatever strip went to whatever. That lasted about 30 minutes and I started mentally trying to “arrange” them. But by then I had to go with whatever they wanted to do. Although I admit, after I cut the pieced strips in the opposite direction I did do some arranging to the values!
So, now I have a background for something? Now what?
I’m not sure if I want to use this piece horizontally, or vertically with the heavier colors at the bottom to weight it down. Do I add an applique layer to it? Do I add something with the quilting? Should it be something floral? Or something abstract?
So many options, so many decisions. I have no idea where it will go from here, but I have a background and my mind is a bit calmer and clearer now. It’s always amazing to me the sense of peacefulness that comes with playing with fabrics and colors!
I right there with you on the therapy aspect of just peicing in strips. I absolutely love what you came up with. I’m willing to bet if you just live with it, it will tell you what it wants to become š
Very pretty, Judy. Jan said what I was going to say: let it talk to you, it’ll tell you what it needs….
Beautiful colors!
I love all the colors and textures you get when you sew “random” pieces together— all your gorgeous hand-dyes are just yummy.
